ShutIt plays a sound of your choice the moment you close your MacBook lid. Here's how to get it working — and how to reach us if it isn't.

- macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or later.
- Any Mac with a lid — Intel or Apple Silicon. (A desktop Mac with no lid has nothing to detect.)
Getting started
- Choose your sound. Drag any MP3 onto the ShutIt window to set it as your lid sound, or use the built-in one.
- Enable the listener. Use Repair Listener and approve the one-time administrator prompt so ShutIt can watch for the lid in the background.
- Test it. Press Test Sound to hear exactly what will play.
- Close the lid. Your sound plays just before your Mac goes to sleep.
Troubleshooting
- No sound on close? Open ShutIt and run Repair Listener, approving the password prompt. Check your Mac isn't muted and the volume is up.
- Status says "Listener needs attention"? That means the background listener isn't installed yet — run Repair Listener to set it up.
- Testing on a desktop Mac? Macs without a lid can't trigger the close sound; try it on a MacBook.
- Want a different sound? Just drag a new MP3 onto the window — it replaces the current one.
Privacy
ShutIt keeps everything on your device and makes no network connections. See the Privacy Policy for details.
